Album: Is mispronouncing players' names an issue?

Something that rubs me the wrong way in the NRL is the butchering of players' names.

I don't mind it too much when someone is trying to learn how to say it properly or if it's just an honest mistake. But after a few years of hearing

Hohaia = Hoe-high-ar instead of Whore-high-ar
Mateo = Mar-tay-oh instead of Mar-tear-or

And every other Maori, Samoan, Tongan, Fijian etc, name being mispronounced. What was first just a minor annoyance started to gradually piss me off more and more until I eventually questioned myself: Is this really as big a deal as I'm making it out to be?

Almost as soon as I asked myself did I answer yes. It is a big deal. At least; it is for me anyway.

But I want to know what your thoughts are. I could very well just be making a mountain out of a molehill.

Do you think that the mispronunciation of players' names is an issue?

Something that rubs me the wrong way in the NRL is the butchering of players' names.

I don't mind it too much when someone is trying to learn how to say it properly or if it's just an honest mistake. But after a few years of hearing

Hohaia = Hoe-high-ar instead of Whore-high-ar
Mateo = Mar-tay-oh instead of Mar-tear-or
