Have to be a bit sour if you cant have a laugh about a justice spokesperson under investigation for shop lifting after retail crime has been the main headlines for so long. Hopefully it ends up being a believable misunderstanding. Seeing any MP under speculation is a poor look.
But you still have to put the boot in.
Two sides to every story

Reading the article, I can imagine the “hardcore medication” for her MS will get the blame whether or not it has been caused by that.
If she did she wouldn't be the first. "I'm on the autism spectrum, Your Honour! It was the autism! NOT ME!" has been used as a defence in a murder case in the US, which failed. Some defence strategies have focussed on the defendant's mental illness (which defence and prosecution both agree exists and takes a toll on the defendant) and use that pre-existing mental illness as a "Wasn't Me!" argument when, actually the link between the mental illnes and the criminal act is at best very tenuous.

Lots of "my bads" and "I need to take time to reflect" missiles incoming from the Greens directions, methinks.

And, hey, if we really want a Parliament That Is Of And Like The People, then that does require some fuckups to be sitting in the Beehive at our expense.

It's a terrible look and if she is guilty it's just awful.
I would rather wait until she is charged first and see what the outcome is.
All you guys who have already found her guilty need to STF up.
P.S.I have never been a fan of hers.

That’s why I mentioned Winona Ryder earlier, got probation and community work for stealing $5000 worth of stuff a while back.

It isn't a good look. Enough New Zealanders think MP's are overpaid. They also get paid a lot higher than the average New Zealander. So seeing reports on an MP shoplifting won't go down well.

There may be more to the story. Usually when an MP or a celebrity gets done for doing something like this even though they earn enough we usually hear about mental illness or something. Some would be genuine some would be an excuse for sympathy or to help them get off the charge.

I would be more concerned if it comes out that she did shoplift and gets away with a warning or gets off. More due to if it was most other people in the general population would they be treated the same way?

I assume this is her first offence. There is likely a few people who have resorted to this due to the cost of living increasing and may have got caught and convicted.

Very true but none of them were crucified on this forum before being charged or facing court and being convicted.
I am not trying to defend her in any way but fuck let's know the facts first or have we now stooped to trial by media.

Exactly. We all understand how our rubbish media operates
**Sorry for the rant. I tried to shorten the examples.

The internet & Social media has meant mis-information can be more common and spread quickly. It also means if you are passionate about something you can look into it. This leads to seeing the mistakes or the narrative the media maybe pushing.

Not just in this country but the media seems to be going down hill in quality world wide. The news articles it is a case of getting content out too quickly to fact check. Copying content from elsewhere assuming they verified it.

The sports articles often have the wrong players listed in the pictures. Or the wrong details. They are lucky that now being digital they can fix their mistakes.

They also have to compete against social media like YouTubers investigating things. I've seen lawyers complain that YouTubers don't have to follow journalistic guidelines like verifying sources. Fair point. But then I know of a court case where during discovery no one in the media verified the person being sued as an expert so he could be used by the media. They just said someone else used him so he is verified, which you can do to a point. But no one actually verified is credentials to start with. They just used him as his data fits their narrative. It is looking like the discovery period is finding out his business and data reporting is a scam. This is a guy used in global articles, and documentaries.

I have been following issues with one journalist overseas where she has blatantly lied, doxxed people. She says she campaigns against online harassment but ends up harassing people online. Even quotes in her article she reached out to people which has been proven she hasn't. Or she sends the request after the fact or in unrealistic time frames for the person to respond to all of the queries.

The opinion articles drive me nuts as they should have more time to check their opinion is based off fact.

We had a former news reader who was a MeToo journalist so she was commenting on items she is passionate about. That is fine but she only sees woman as victims. Destroying a mans life is fine. When was proven to be the other way around she should have written how each case should be taken on it's merits or it is a step back in progress being made.

A political journalist / university lecturer who writes articles occasionally wrote an article on why getting Māori vaccinated in my home town is hard work. He tried to play the race card about the history of the town using the term locals. Basically the locals lined up to be labourers at the Saw Mill and the pakeha lined up to the high paying paper mill, engineering or management.

I know it is total bullshit. I know a lot of Maori who worked in the paper mills, engineering roles during that time. I was joking with my old neighbour about her father still working. She said he was going for the record (50 years).

Why would they line up to do shift work? typically you would go straight to your work area to relieve the previous shift and get a handover done.

The general population aren't in as privileged position either. Certainly they aren't an MP and their parties justice spokesperson as well. Given that she is both of those things, of course there is going to be further scrutiny of her. If she has done this it will be difficult to find an excuse to get off IMO. Particularly as there is enough for police to be investigating it. More than likely it will be brushed off as a simple misunderstanding.

I’m sure we will find out it’s all just a big misunderstanding!

Nothing to see here…

People shoplift out of my kids Bunnings store everyday and the police do nothing so why should an MP be any different?
to be honest, who could blame her? she probably needed to shoplift because of the state this government have put this country in over the three weeks they’ve had in power.

True but the situation I wrote was a hypothetical example so not really possible for them to be crucified on here.

If someone in the general population got done for shop lifting it would only make the local papers if it was big enough or if they had a court news section. That would also be well after the fact. It is played out in the media or at least reported due to her high profile role. It would be similar if a CEO from a high profile company did the same thing. That would likely get reported on. But likely less discussion. Well unless it was part of the Warriors management or the one of the sponsors.

But point taken.

Lots of ifs and buts at this stage.

Few Warriors players have allegedly done a lot worse, AFB and Walker for a start, I'm more morally compromised by them than some greens MP I never voted for.
I voted Jacinda in 2020, last election I was torn between Nats, TOP and Te Pāti Māori, ended up going in to vote and ripping up the form and walking out in disgust.
Didn't see Webby's name anywhere so none of this is my fault mate.
