Jono Wright to debut, Lolohea to centre
Media has been hidden. Please Register to view.

Jonathan Wright will make his club debut and Sam Tomkins returns from injury in two personnel changes for the Vodafone Warriors’ second- round NRL encounter with the Raiders at GIO Stadium in Canberra on Sunday (6.30pm kick-off local time; 8.30pm NZT).

Wright, who turned 28 last Sunday, is named on the right wing and Tomkins is back at fullback after missing the Newcastle clash last Saturday with a hamstring complaint.

The selection results in Lolohea being switched to the centres for the injured Konrad Hurrell and Solomone Kata is named in the centres. He was due to play there against the Knights but was moved to the wing when would-be debutant Ken Maumalo was ruled out after picking up a hamstring injury in the team’s final pre-game run.

Utility Ben Henry reverts to the interchange bench along with veteran hooker Nathan Friend and rookie props Sam Lisone and Albert Vete, both impressive in their debuts last weekend. Dropping out of the squad is prop Suaia Matagi with ex-Canberra outside back Matt Allwood named as 18th man.

Wright, who was completing a three-game suspension last week, is set to become the third of the major recruits to make his club debut as Vodafone Warrior No 198. He was signed in early December after amassing 91 appearances for the Eels, Bulldogs and Sharks since his debut in 2009; his games at first-grade level have been spread between the wing and the centres.

Vodafone Warriors assistant coach Tony Iro said Hurrell was still in a lot of discomfort from the left knee injury he received in the Newcastle contest. After going off the field early in the game he was able to return later to play out the match but Iro said Hurrell’s knee was still swollen.

“With Sam returning, Tui goes to the centres,” said Iro.

“He has trained in the outside backs throughout the preseason. Obviously he’s a talented kid and we know what he’s capable of.

“Jono is very experienced with close to 100 games. He was specifically brought to the club to fill that role of being able to play on the wing or in the centres.”

The Vodafone Warriors will start with the same pack used against the Knights, a combination packed with experience. Captain Simon Mannering will be playing his 214th NRL match, second rower Ryan Hoffman his 247th, prop Jacob Lillyman his 188th and fellow front rower Ben Matulino his 154th. Hooker Thomas Leuluai has played almost 300 games in the NRL and Super League combined while second rower Bodene Thompson plays his 87th match this weekend.

On the bench veteran hooker Nathan Friend takes his tally to 199 games leaving him in line to achieve his 200th milestone in the first home game of the year at Mount Smart Stadium on March 21 against Parramatta (5.00pm kick-off).

The whole-hearted Mannering was again the team’s ever-reliable workhorse last Saturday as he topped the tackle count with a massive 52 tackles and didn’t miss one. Debutant props Albert Vete and Sam Lisone both impressed, Vete making 125 metres from 19 runs and Lisone 91 from 13 plus 28 tackles. Hoffman (129), Thompson (118) and Matulino (145) also topped 100 metres as did Lolohea (213), Manu Vatuvei (175), Chad Townsend (147) and Kata (122).

Ah, Jono Wright, ah... I'll guess we'll see.

Lolohea the centre is interesting, hopefully if he makes a good fist of it that's an option to cover for laumape. His front on defence could be something to worry about though.

WOuld have made sense to me but the article with the team naming quoted Iro as saying Lolohea would be playing centre, just hope it doesn't turn into a carlos situation...

Glad to see Wright there, should hopefully add some much needed composure to that right edge.

Tuis going to be thinking, what the heck do I have to do to nail down one spot? Hope it doesn't get too much for him, all this chopping and changing - though, I suspect if there's one person at the Warriors that could handle it, it's him, he might be the most self-assured, composed, confident-in-his-own abilities rookie I've seen... Certianly at this club.

Good to have Sam back - he makes a huge difference to this team on attack.

Interested to see Kata go at centre, for some reason I just think that position suits him more - Id love to see him develop the Justin Hodges scoot from dummy half, which is incredibly effective, I reckon Katas got exactly the right skillset for that.

Still think our bench is a little small, I don't think we can carry both Friend and Benry... Especially against that monster Canberra pack. We can't rely only on Lisone and Vete for impact from the bench...

Still, I do think we should win this game, and win it well. Time for SJ to stand up.

    Why?
Allwood played a total of 11 games for one of the worst teams in the NRL last year and got dropped.
Wright has played nearly a hundred first grade games and scored 28 tries.

We have enough inexperience in the backs already and Wright combats that.

I get the feeling we're going to see the following on gameday. No sources, just my assumption based off our nightmare injury start.

    3. Lolohea
    18. Allwood
    2. Wright
    4. Kata
    5. Vatuvei

Wright has been named over Allwood based on the fact he has played nearly 10 times the first grade games, so makes sense given our centre inexperience.

Allwood will only play if Tomkins ruled out and i'm praying he isnt.

    Otherwise,

    I'm happy with that team.

I would have thought Wright in the centres Tui at wing would have made more sense. Either way in happy with Wrights inclusion - much needed experience in our back line.

My guess would be that Wright offers experience, while he can be ignored out on the wing, while Tui will get more chances with the ball at centre, and if things go pear-shaped, they can switch.

Awesome team list. EXACTLY the same as my comp team (even down to the bench numbering) - just me and INTERCEPTORINTERCEPTOR in it if the team is unchanged, I think. Lets hope it is team-as-named on gameday.

Lolohea in the centres.. come on stop farking around with player selections already, just put Wright in the centres and leave Lolohea on the wing he'll still do the damage.

Good to see Pomkins back we need his energy and attack

BTW those are amazing stats from Mannering at the weekend 52 tackles didn't miss one, what a player.

Guess I'll reserve judgement but that backline fills me with no confidence...

Looks like the forwards will lay the platform, but I can't see the backs taking advantage!

Tui will be fine at centre. At the end of the day he can't exactly be worse than Henry who had zero offensive production last week and was average on D.
Konnie didn't offer a he'll of a lot on one leg and Kata will be better playing inside.
The bench doesn't worry me at all. If we play quick disciplined football, which appears to be the plan, we will bust the Raiders up the middle and draw penalties to give us the advantage.
Our fitness will tire their big boys out and cause them to make errors.
We were one trial game short this year and a lot would have been learnt from Saturday.
Warriors to put 50 on em again.

To continue that optimistic train of thought, if things do go pearshaped for Tui in the centres, Wright is an okay defender, so he can step in.

Also, it might just be me going rogue, but I'm wondering if the plan is for Tui to play centre in attack, then float out to the wing in defense? It would make sense that we want him to get the ball more on attack, rather than being parked out wide.

Lastly, interesting stats: Tui currently leads the competition in kick return metres and all run metres.

But on a more serious note if we leave Canberra on Sunday without the points, Cappy MUST make changes, surely Lillyman Goldengirl and Friendy must have been told that after the shit they produced on Saturday their on thin ice, Will the boss have the balls to do it tho ? This is one massive game that the Warriors CAN'T afford to fuck up in, if so its going be same old Warriors year in year out.. and i dont think Doyle is someone to palm off with ah next week will be different !!!!

Pleased that Lolohea is in the centers.
The Warriors need a Ball playing center. especially since Kata and Hurrell are clones.

Vete and Lisone are in a position where they could end up being NRL regulars. Good luck boys.
