Andrew Fifita named in Indigenous All Stars team to play World All Stars

Mal Meninga has hinted he would have left Andrew Fifita out of the Indigenous All Stars side as the controversial Cronulla prop contends with the possibility of an NRL ban.

Fifitia was on Wednesday named in coach Laurie Daley's 20-man squad for the February 10 clash against Meninga's World All Stars, a day after receiving a breach notice from the NRL.

The 27-year-old was asked to show cause over his relationship with convicted one-punch killer Kieran Loveridge.

Fifita could be rubbed out for the start of the 2017 season but is reportedly likely to cop a $20,000 fine after writing "FKL" - a message of support for childhood friend Loveridge, who is serving a 10-year jail sentence for the killing of Thomas Kelly in Kings Cross in 2012.

Australian coach Meninga refused to pick Fifita for the recent Four Nations tour because of the integrity unit's investigations and because he was not considered a fit and proper character.

While Meninga said he had no problem with Fifita lining up for the exhibition game in Newcastle, he said the character of the player should be considered.

"I would suggest to you that is a good point - the character of the person on and off the field really matters when you select representative footy sides," Meninga said.

Daley said Fifita's involvement in the game was dependent upon him not being banned.

"The selection criteria was he was available so the fans have picked him so he's been included," Daley said.

"I've coached him before and certainly had no issues with him. He's always proud and he loves playing in this game.

"It will depend on what the breach notice says and whether it's a fine or whether he's looking at missing games. He has been selected subject to him being cleared."

Fifita has played in the 2012, 2013 and 2016 All Stars games.

Despite a blockbusting 2016 season during the Sharks' premiership campaign, he was not considered for the Australian squad and was snubbed for the Clive Churchill Medal, despite a match-winning display in the Sharks' grand final win.

However Daley had no concerns about selecting him for the All Stars game.

"Andrew Fifita had a terrific year last year," Daley said.

"I'd say he'd be looking to put it all (the Loveridge saga) behind him over the next three or four days."

Fifita will line up in a strong indigenous side which will feature Kangaroos representatives Johnathan Thurston, Greg Inglis, Sam Thaiday and Blake Ferguson.

The World All Stars have included Jarryd Hayne at fullback however Queensland and Australian captain Cameron Smith was not picked because of his packed schedule during the next 12 months which will include the World Cup.

Sydney Roosters rake Jake Friend will slot in at No.9 in Smith's absence while Mitchell Moses and Adam Reynolds will line up in the halves.

Vodafone Warriors prop Sam Lisone has today been named by new coach Mal Meninga to line up for the Harvey Norman NRL All Stars against the Indigenous All Stars at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle on February 10.

Manu Vatuvei played in Wayne Bennett-coached All Stars teams three times – 2010, 2012 and 2015 – while others previously selected have been Feleti Mateo (2011 and 2013), Shaun Johnson (2013), Nathan Friend (2015), Ryan Hoffman (2016) and Konrad Hurrell (2016).

Joel Moon (2011) and Dane Nielsen (2013) were selected for the Indigenous All Stars when they were with the Vodafone Warriors.

I appreciate how important this game is to the Aborigine boys, but to Warriors fans what does it mean? A chance for one of our guys to get injured.

I have come to the point where the All Stars game and the Nines are irrelevant, they just carry no importance and not many people will remember these events in years to come. The only thing i can remember from the All Stars match is Sailor's try celebration, thats it.

They should just have a Indigenous All stars vs Maori All stars game. Would be a better spectacle and both teams would actually care.

Agree. You never see Indigenous players pull out. All look at selection as a great honour. Why not alternate it with Maori, Tongan, Samoan and Fijian teams? Its time the NRL did something to bring the mana back to the event as the All Stars team is a joke...

    MAORI ALLSTARS.

    1- Pita Hiku
    2- Dallin Watene Zelezniak
    3- Jordan Kahu
    4- Dean Whare
    5- Jordan Rapana
    6- Te Maire Martin
    7- Benji Marshall
    8- Jessie Bromwich
    9- Issac Luke
    10- Russell Packer
    11- Bodene Thompson
    12- Joseph Tapine
    13- Elijah Taylor

    14- Kodi Nikorima
    15- Nathaniel Peteru
    16- Adam Blair
    17- Kevin Proctor

JWH , Rory Obrien , sam McKendry , Taane Milne , Bryson Goodwin , Manaia Cherrington , Anthony Cherrington , Dann Levi , David Bhana ,
Jeremy Hawkins , Nathaniel Roache , SKD , Jessie Manu

Different from what I think our Warriors would chose , Tapine and Thompson are my difference.
More thrust and variety on attack.
As for Rusty , he was good in 2016 after returning , his work rate will be better this year.
I think Nathaniel Peteru could have a breakout season if he can cement his spot , thought he ran well with the Titans.

You could include the likes of Jason Nightingale and Lewis Brown whom have previously played for New Zealand Moari. As well as Gerard Beale, Greg Eastwood who all have Maori ancestry. You could also include some 'Mozzies' as well (Timana Tahu played for Australia but also played for New Zealand Maori), Such as Jordan McLean, Dane Gagai, Javid Bowen, Josh Hoffman, Jayden Nikorima James Tamou, Corey Norman and Lloyd Perrett.

He has no Maori ancestry. JT himself has said that his dad is a Kiwi but he isn't Maori.

That isuue came up with the Maori All Blacks a few years ago when there were a few Maoris playing for the Wallabies, Timana Tahu was one, nothing to stop it as the selection criteria is Maori. Personally I can see both sides of the argument.
