    Auckland doubleheader in 2018
    Richard Becht

    Sun 8th October, 07:32PM

The NRL will break new ground in 2018 by staging a doubleheader extravaganza at Mount Smart Stadium with the Vodafone Warriors and the Wests Tigers hosting fifth-round games against 2017 premier Melbourne and beaten grand finalist North Queensland on Saturday, April 7.

Stars will be thick on the ground when the Vodafone Warriors face the Cowboys in the main game with the Tigers meeting the Storm in the early match.

While confirming the first doubleheader ever played in Auckland, the NRL also announced today that there will be three other two-game events in Perth, Sydney and Brisbane. The Vodafone Warriors will again be involved in Western Australia where they’ll face the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the first-round doubleheader at the new 60,000-seater Perth Stadium on Saturday, March 10.

Kick-off times will be revealed when the full draw is released later this month.

“The doubleheader at Mount Smart Stadium is an unbelievable opportunity to showcase the NRL like never before in Auckland,” said Vodafone Warriors CEO Cameron George.

“Having so many of the game’s stars on show on the same day is going to be fantastic. It’s exciting for our club, for our members and fans and also for the city of Auckland and the surrounding region.

“Jim (executive chairman Jim Doyle) has been working on the concept for some time with the NRL, Wests Tigers and ATEED (Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development). “We’re thrilled it has come together and combining with the Tigers is a really good fit for us.”

ATEED general manager destination Steve Armitage says the doubleheader is an exciting new event for Auckland and a welcome addition to the 2018 events calendar.

“Auckland, and New Zealand, have a strong league fan base and club culture,” he said.

“As well as being an unmissable new experience for local fans, we look forward to working closely with the Vodafone Warriors to promote special weekend packages to also entice Australian and domestic visitors to Auckland for the doubleheader.

“We’re delighted with today’s announcement of what will be a superb weekend for the city, a boost to our regional economy and Auckland’s reputation as a great league destination.”

George said the move to bring two games to Mount Smart Stadium on the same bill would mean the Vodafone Warriors’ 12 home games will all be played in Auckland next season.

He said memberships would still be built around 11 home games.

“As a result of this move we won’t be taking one of our home games to a venue outside Auckland, as we have done in recent times,” he said.

“The doubleheader is excluded from 11-game memberships but there’ll be an exclusive window for our Vodafone Warriors members to buy their seats before tickets go on sale to the general public. We’re expecting tickets will be available from late November.”

There are so many storylines set to play out.

The Vodafone Warriors will be fielding their new-look side against the Cowboys including 2018 acquisitions Adam Blair, Tohu Harris, Gerard Beale and Leivaha Pulu (with more signings to come).

There’ll be enormous interest in North Queensland with the legendary Jonathan Thurston on what shapes as a season-long farewell tour before he retires. Alongside him will be the likes of controversial Kiwi-Tonga international Jason Taumalolo, Michael Morgan and Matt Scott.

The Storm will be starting life post-Cooper Cronk but still boasting Cameron Smith and Billy Slater along with an array of other stars including Suliasi Vunivalu, Josh Addo-Carr, Will Chambers, Cameron Munster and Kiwis Jesse and Kenny Bromwich and Nelson Asofa-Solomona.

The two home teams for the occasion have strong links throughout their history.

Of the Vodafone Warriors’ 2018 squad, Blair, centre Blake Ayshford and prop James Gavet are former Tigers team-mates while the club’s head of athletic performance Balin Cupples played for the Wests Tigers and was on the football staff there.

The Tigers also have a potent Mount Smart Stadium connection.

Former Vodafone Warriors fullback and head coach Ivan Cleary coaches the Tigers while one of his assistants Andrew Webster was previously with the Vodafone Warriors under Andrew McFadden.

Ex-Vodafone Warriors back rower Elijah Taylor and utility Tuimoala Lolohea were on the Tigers’ 2017 roster while Cleary has secured props Ben Matulino and Russell Packer for next season. Along with Taylor, they played for the Vodafone Warriors in the 2011 NRL grand final.

The Tigers also have former Kiwi captain Benji Marshall returning to his original club from the Brisbane Broncos next season.

    • While the Vodafone Warriors face the South Sydney Rabbitohs in one leg of the Perth doubleheader, the other match will feature the “home” side Canterbury-Bankstown against Melbourne in the first-round on Saturday, March 10.
    • South Sydney will meet Manly and Parramatta will take on Cronulla in the third round at ANZ Stadium on March 24 while the final doubleheader will see Melbourne and Manly as the home teams facing Gold Coast and Brisbane in the 10th round at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday, May 12.

Nice, so over the Perth vs Bunnies matches, we should tell them to f**k off.. Must be getting some serious cash for it.

If we have to play in Perth I'm happy it'll be round 1, in between rounds hurts us.

We'll, they're trying really hard to make it a 10 game losing streak. :grumpy:

Because its round 1 the team should have the opportunity to head over a day or two earlier than usual to get over the long haul flight.

    This.

I've got no patience for the "it's Perth it's 4 hours out of the player's normal timezone" excuse. We don't give the Cowboys any leeway for coming down to Auckland which is at least 3 hours out of their timezone and if they come down in June/July it's a fair bit colder.

As to jonesy101's point, we do have a habit of being slow starters, so hopefully the NRL will be good to us and give us the following games early:
    Rabbitohs A or H
    Dragons A or H
    Sea Eagles A or H
    Broncos A or H
    Raiders A or H
    Roosters A or H
    Eels A or H
    Storm A or H
    Panthers A or H
    Sharks A or H
    Cowboys A or H
    Titans A or H
    Raiders A or H
    Knights A or H
    Tigers A or H

Get all those shitty 24 games out of the way, hey presto, we rock into the Origin period with the shit games we always lose Done. And. Dusted.

The Origin period will be in October, hopefully. Stand alone weekends. Come on, NRL, let's do this...

If the NRL can confirm the double-headers already, hopefully that means the official draw for 2018 won't be too far away....

Not sure how I feel about the double-header not being part of the season ticket price - absolutely Warriors ticket holders should have to pay for the earlier game, but it's a bit stink if we have to pay extras for the Warriors game at Mt Smart Stadium...

I’d expect that we got the doube header in Auckland on the condition that we took part in the double header in Perth... they would know that there are a lot of Kiwis in Perth and we would be one of the more popular sides over there.

As for members not having the tickets included for the double header at Mt Smart, I’d expect the price of the memberships would reflect having 1 less game than previous seasons, otherwise there will be people with pitchforks waiting. Let’s not forget this is a club on 9game losing streak that has severely tested the patience of a large chunk of VERY loyal fans this season.

I for one have no plans to renew my out of town membership next season.

Pity there's no away home game. I enjoy the road trip or flight down. Hopefully they take all pre season games out of Auckland to engage a wider fan base...

Looking forward to the double header over here in Perth to open the new stadium. It is absolutely ridiculous, world class. 60k and already a tonne sold.

Seems a shame that the double header isn't included in the membership package...make sense I guess as we normally get 11 home games with 1 home game out of Auckland anyway.

Hopefully when they say members get first dibs at tickets, that means we can choose our actual membership seats...and the prices aren't through the roof either.

[2018 NRL draw] Full schedule is out !!!

Vodafone Warriors members and fans can now plan the entire 2018 NRL season following the release of a draw which breaks from recent tradition by listing full details for every match.

A regular season schedule kicking off against South Sydney in Perth on Saturday, March 10 winds up with the Vodafone Warriors hosting back-to-back Friday night home games against Penrith on August 24 and Canberra on August 31.

The first home match at Mount Smart Stadium is against Gold Coast on St Patrick’s Day (Saturday, March 17).

“The big change is that the NRL has had full control of the draw this time allowing clubs to plan for 2018 with real certainty,” said Vodafone Warriors CEO Cameron George.

“For the first time our members and fans can look at the draw and know exactly where and when the Vodafone Warriors are playing each and every round. That makes it so much easier for them as well as us in terms of looking at our home game days and weekly football schedules for our teams.”

A highlight of the just-released draw is a festival of football in April when the Vodafone Warriors will have three straight games at Mount Smart Stadium.

It starts against North Queensland on Saturday, April 7 – the historic doubleheader also involving Wests Tigers and Melbourne – followed by Brisbane on Saturday, April 14 and St George Illawarra on Friday, April 20.

Another feature is a midseason sequence of six consecutive matches against top eight sides starting with Manly in Christchurch on Saturday, June 9, North Queensland in Townsville on June 15, Cronulla at Mount Smart Stadium on June 29, away to Penrith (July 6) and Brisbane (July 15) and Melbourne in Auckland on July 22. The sequence is broken up by the stand-alone weekend for Origin II set down for Sunday, June 24.

Of the 12 home games, six are against 2017 top eight clubs, six are on Saturdays, five on Friday nights and one on a Sunday. Overall the Vodafone Warriors have 11 Saturday games, eight on Friday nights, four on Sundays and one on a Wednesday (Anzac Day against Melbourne).

“It’s exciting having such an intense programme in April, including the doubleheader,” said George.

“Another feature of the draw is the strong flavour of Friday night and Saturday matches at home.

“They present us with different models and we’re working on initiatives to make each and every one of them memorable for everyone who comes along. We’re certainly out to put on a St Patrick’s Day party atmosphere for our first home game.”

This is the first draw of the post-Anzac Test era. With no representative weekend in May, the NRL has created a stand-alone weekend for Origin II in late June while the Vodafone Warriors will also have a bye in round 13 coinciding with Queen’s Birthday weekend in New Zealand (June 2-4).

They’re away to the Sydney Roosters on March 31 over the Easter holiday period (March 30-April 2) and are at home to the same opponents on May 12, the day before Mother’s Day.

The clubs the Vodafone Warriors face once in 2018 are Cronulla (home), Newcastle (home), Wests Tigers (home), Manly (away), Parramatta (away) and Canterbury-Bankstown (away). They are home and away to the other nine clubs.
