It seems many of us have short memories as the inevitable 'excitement' around 2018 builds. I hate to be the harbinger of bad news, but it's worth putting everything into context before we all get carried away by exclamations around 'best ever recruitment' and 'hardest ever pre-season'.
Fact #1. Steve Kearney is STILL coach.
Kearney's first grade coaching record now stands at 66 matches; 17 wins; 48 losses; and 1 draw, at a wholly unimpressive 25.8% winning ratio. Get your head around that. It is literally one of the worst winning percentages in NRL coaching history. Heck, even Craig 'Tugger' Coleman had a better one at Souths (31.5%). You want to know what Matty Elliott's overall winning percentage is? 45.7. McFadden? 43.3. Kearney's is barely past 25%. It's atrocious, and no amount...

Auckland doubleheader in 2018
Sun 8th October, 07:32PM
The NRL will break new ground in 2018 by staging a doubleheader extravaganza at Mount Smart Stadium with the Vodafone Warriors and the Wests Tigers hosting fifth-round games against 2017 premier Melbourne and beaten grand finalist North Queensland on Saturday, April 7.
Stars will be thick on the ground when the Vodafone Warriors face the Cowboys in the main game with the Tigers meeting the Storm in the early match.
While confirming the first doubleheader ever played in Auckland, the NRL also announced today that there will be three other two-game events in Perth, Sydney and Brisbane. The Vodafone Warriors will again be involved in Western Australia where they’ll face the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the first-round...
Decided to start this discussion because of a comment in the Des Hasler thread about Kearney only making excuses. Not having a dig at the poster concerned because I think he's at least partly right, but I do sometimes think that when a coach/player states a fact about his team (ie losing 200 games of experience from the previous season), people who already didn't particularly like the coach/player label the fact an excuse - ie "Yeah, he could have risen above that anyway/that's just a smokescreen because he's crap" whereas people who do like the player/coach would go "Fair enough, not right to say that's the only thing that stuffed us but that's a lot of experience that walked out the door."
So, fellow forummers, the question is: What makes a fact a reason rather than an excuse? To...
I've just had a sneak preview of the entire 2018 range, excluding the Heritage and any other one-off jerseys.
I wasn't allowed to take photos so I'll do my best to describe:
Home and Away - Almost exactly the same as 2017, the only change is the CCC logo has now moved to each shoulder. This probably means that we'll be getting a collar sponsor. The collar is the same as 2017, despite CCC releasing a new template (see the Australia World Cup jersey).
Nines - Obviously the Nines are not going ahead, but they said they will still likely sell the jersey. The jersey is predominantly grey, and has the new CCC collar. There is a drawing of a Maori Warrior on the abdomen (much like the one on the 2016 Nines jersey, except full colour) with a sweeping NZ style background with ferns,...
This is what our team needs and its in our back yard.
Roosters coaches’ brutal pre-season sacrifice
PLENTY of coaches take their teams to hell and back each pre-season. Craig Bellamy uses his infamous boot camps to sort the wannabes from the gonnabes in Melbourne.
Wayne Bennett likes to beat his players home in the time trials, reminding them that if a 67-year-old should-be retiree can do it, they can too.
But Trent Robinson, he and his entire football staff signed up to “see the sights of Queenstown”, as Aidan Guerra puts it.
“Beautiful place Queenstown.”
Robinson, assistant coaches Matt King and Craig Fitzgibbon and under 20s boss Anthony Barnes. Recruitment man Adam Hartigan and a half dozen others from the Tricolours support crew.
They’re all there slogging, struggling,...
So is this bumbling excuse for a NRL club going to finally do something smart and agressively go after Hasler?
If we want the "is it the players or is it the coach" question that follows pretty much every season answered, we actually need to hire a quality coach to prove one way or the other...we cant keep hireing pathetic coaches who've never won a damn thing, and then turn around and say it's not the coaches fault when yet another appalling season comes to an end.
Roderick 'Rocky' Cavanagh has passed away.
For those that dont know of him he was one of three people, along with Brian Elliston and John Ackland, involved with the Mt Albert Rugby League club who drafted the first letter to the then NSWFRL and Australian Rugby League Chairman Ken Arthurson about the possibility of an Auckland team joining the Australian competition.
They decided to go straight to Arthurson instead of through proper channels like Auckland Rugby League or the New Zealand Rugby League because they thought if they did the idea would never have achieved any traction.
While the real leg work was done by others, the Warriors and its fans owe Rocky a small debt of gratitude for his involvement in bringing about this team we all support. Without his,...

Brutal pre-season training breaks exhausted Brisbane Broncos side
Chris Garry, CourierMail
January 3, 2014 11:00pm
IT IS the Broncos' first training session of the year, the temperature has reached 32 degrees, the players have been running for 90 minutes and Ben Barba just threw up.
Welcome to the brutal Broncos regime designed by new chief conditioner Alex Corvo.
The key tenant is more running and longer sessions.
A major departure from the short and sharp workouts of past seasons.
The club is confident the contrast is one of several changes that will resurrect their failing...
Lol you guys really exaggerate the no offload thing like SK rubs his hands with glee when he sees a low offload stat.
SK got Blair for a reason abd it's to play the way Blair normally plays. Offloads are part of that and will continue to be next year.
[Signing] Beale confirmed for three years
Richard Becht | Image: www.photosport.nz
Fri 8th September, 05:58PM
With the contract signed only today, the Vodafone Warriors have been able to confirm Kiwi and Cronulla utility Gerard Beale will join the club on a three-year deal from next season.
The 27-year-old 2016 NRL premiership winner is the club’s third new signing after back rowers Tohu Harris (Melbourne) and Leivaha Pulu (Gold Coast) were secured earlier in the year.
“While there has been a lot of discussion about Gerard coming to the club, we weren’t in a position to make an announcement until his contract had been officially signed by both parties,” said Vodafone Warriors CEO Cameron George.
“Now the formalities have been completed, we’re...
