    Hey All,

I'm heading to Auckland NZ on Friday for a Contiki that goes for a week. :) Pretty excited, and first time NZ tourist.

While it's a pretty tight schedule, any suggestions on things to check out/do in Auckland, Waitomo, Rotorua, Paihia?

    Cheers,
    oman

If your on a bus tour they will have most of the big things for tourists already as part of your package. Like you said time will be your biggest problem as sitting on a bus will take up a fair chunk of your time. Going on the places you're going to I'd say you won't have too much time standing around wondering what to do next.

Yeah like Waitomo. Only one thing to do there lol. Same with Rotorua. The typical Maori themed things are always a big drawcard.

Hopefully the weather plays nice when youre here Oman. A day along the Viaduct on a sunny day is always a good. Anywhere along the coast in fact. Fishing charter is always a good option if you gotta a day to spare. A visit to Mt Smart would be good and you could talk them into letting you see Mad Butchers collection.

    Snows out further south...

There is an awesome itinerary already planned, and it was more on the unlikely chance there is a big chunk of time free. There is some free time for optional activities which is good. Thanks for your replies above. :)

    tajhay On Titanic.

Hate to be a downer but contiki tours are horrible and should be avoided unless you _just_ want to get drunk often in a different country. Its awesome for meeting new people, but you can do the same at hostels everywhere.

Really depends on what you wanna do. Theres a few activities in Rotorua like zorb and the luges etc. There would be a hangi and Maori song performance in your package whilst you are there.

    Auckland:
    Lunch/Drinks in Davenport.
    Drive along Mission Bay.
Maybe cruise/hike to Rangitoto or Waiheke Island
Mt Eden Summit is quite nice and has a good view to the water, city and outer suburbs
    Dinner/Night out near the Viaduct.

Whats the iteniary they gave you? Ive been on a contiki and met many others who had previously done contiki as well. Lack of time at certain spots/attractions is a common theme.

Take a good camera if you can!

Meeting people is probably the highlight of this type of trip, and they really come into their own on a longer holiday but over 7 days going to the places they try to fit in it is pretty hectic, on the bus at 7 am, an hour or so at your stop and then quickly loaded back on the bus. I did one years ago around Europe, about 7 or 8 weeks I think, a great way to see all the tourist spots, but it was a bit different for me as I spent another 2 1/2 years up there. Got the Kombi and went back to the places I missed and the places I liked best over that time.
That said caving, probably rafting, the zorb and jumping off the Sky Tower or even seeing a lamb at the Agrodome can be pretty cool to someone that's has lived their life jambed in a city.

In Auckland try the White House in Queen Street or Mermaids in Fort Street - better quality than Showgirls or Calendargirls.

Did a job for the owner of this fine establishment and got paid half of it in White House money. Thoroughly recommend the upstairs area...

The day I got back to London after my trip there was another tour about to leave, it had 44 American chicks and 4 Aussie guys, I was never sure if the guys were going to have the greatest trip in history or the worst.

Declaring the money was OK, it was claiming the GST on the drum of baby oil and 20kgs of chocolate buttons that got tricky.

I took a client up there the other year and he got thrown out for arguing about the two-shots-on-the-black-rule.
