NRL ROUND #12 | Return to Mount Smart

    Richard Becht

    Tue 27th May, 04:07PM

Veteran prop Sam Rapira makes his comeback from a month-long lay-off for the Vodafone Warriors’ ‘Return to Mount Smart’ 12th-round NRL encounter with Newcastle on Sunday (4.00pm kick-off; match day sponsor: Canterbury of New Zealand).

His first outing since the 16-10 Anzac Day win over Melbourne coincides with a red letter day for his long-time team-mate and captain Simon Mannering who will make his 200th NRL appearance and 100th as captain in the first home game of the year at Mount Smart Stadium.

Rapira has missed the last three matches with a back complaint but has been cleared to make his return this week, being named on the interchange bench.

Vodafone Warriors head coach Andrew McFadden has retained the same backline used in last Saturday’s 24-16 win against Gold Coast, including naming halfback Shaun Johnson who is in doubt with his injured left ankle.

“Shaun is still 50-50. We’ll give him until Thursday or Friday and, if he’s not fit, Tuimoala (Lolohea) will make his debut,” he said.

“The good thing is Tui has been training with us. Last week was good preparation because right up until the last minute he thought he was in the side to play Gold Coast.”

While welcoming Rapira back, McFadden hasn’t named utility Ben Henry who has been troubled by some stiffness in his left knee.

“It’s really important having Sam back. He’s one of our captains, he’s fully fit and he’s ready to go in an important game for us this week,” said McFadden.

“Ben has had a flare-up with his old knee injury. He’s possibly a chance but we’ll probably rest him which allows us to push Ben (Matulino) into the second row.”

Suaia Matagi is named to start in the front row with the other three bench players used against the Titans – Siliva Havili, Feleti Mateo and Sebastine Ikahihifo – joining Rapira.

Apart from Henry, McFadden said Kevin Locke wasn’t available after being ruled out last week with an ankle injury.

The Vodafone Warriors will take a 50-50 record into the second half of the regular season if they overcome the Knights on Sunday for their sixth win of the year.

McFadden encouraged Vodafone Warriors members and fans to support the first home game of the season at Mount Smart Stadium, even more so because it is such a significant occasion for Mannering with his 200-100 double.

“I hope we get a big crowd because it would be a fitting tribute to Simon,” he said.

“He has stood out in my time here as a leader. He’s a true warrior, so to speak, and deserves all the support for the contribution he makes to this club.”

The Vodafone Warriors have built a healthy record against Newcastle winning 12 out of 16 encounters between the two clubs since 2005 and six out of the last seven; the only reverse has been the 19-24 loss at Mount Smart Stadium in 2012.

The record over the last 10 seasons contrasts with the 10 seasons from 1995-2004 when the Vodafone Warriors won just two out of 14 with one match drawn.

Sunday’s match is fan favourite Nathan Friend’s 50th for the club.

Injured, knee's playing up again apparently. SJ is 50/50 will be given till thursday to prove his fitness, if not Lolohea debuts.

Good to have Rapira back, solid team

Absolutely rate this team. Very excited by the make up of the bench. If Ikahihifo continues to lift we'll have a pack full of starch. In three years of Foruming, this is a team list that I absolutely agree with.

It's really been amazing watching Cappy implement many of the things most on this forum were calling for...

    • Nielsen dropped
    • Simon to Lock
    • Mutts to backrow
    • Friend being spelled by Havili
    • Laumape + Hurrell centre combo
    • Having SJ and ST swapping roles on occasion, allowing Shaun to get wider..
Absolutely loving the confidence the team are exhibiting under Cappy. One of the best teams named in quite some time, I would think.

    Can't wait for the game.

All this love for the team, a return to our spiritual home, opposition in turmoil - I predict 40 point loss!

No - I expect we'll rush out to an 18 point lead and lose 18-19 to a drop goal in the 78th minute after missing at least three attempts ourselves plus missing two conversions.

Erotic team. Love it. Mutts officially our star back rower. Havili on the bench learning his future trade. Fusitua becoming our best right winger. The Chad learning how to control a team. Shaun becoming his own man. Possibly finally living up to all the hype. Yep. McFadden has us in a good place. Hard work got us here. Hard work will keep us here. Hard work will get us to where we want to go. May our attack improve. And most importantly. May the rock defence continue.

If Johnson is out it puts a whole new spin on things that makes me a little bit less confident than if he does play.

Still need to see a bit more before I totally sign off on the 3 prop thing.

The Knights were good against the Seagles during their last hit-out, and only have Darius playing Origin. Though being Sunday and the fact that he plays on the wing I'd expect him to back up. So all in all they'll be better for the week off, and will be desperate for a win after this Tinkler shit, as well as the fact that their season is in grave danger of being almost over at the halfway point..

Beau Scott will have some Inglis/Papalii action to deal with. Wouldn't mind hearing that he isn't getting on the plane.

This is the game to dictate our season imo. Win here, get that 50/50 record, confidence high heading into the bye.

Lose it, and it'll take weeks to make up for it in terms of making the fans happy, and points on the table.

It's a game we should win comfortably, and one you would put a question mark on if we'll turn up or not.

    Massive game!!!

Wow a team full of common sense selections.
The best 17 we have available this week is going to play. Cappy is making a habit of doing this.
Just want to see some good solid footy, repeat sets, protect the ball, pressure the Knights with some strong defence. Like we did against the Storm.
This game feels a lot like the home games against the Sharks and Panthers last year; we're playing an average team, we should win BUT if we don't treat them with respect we will lose.
The Knights in recent weeks have played and lost to the top 3 teams on the ladder, a 6 point loss to the dogs, got pumped by Panthers and just lost to Manly.
If we get stuck into a grinding game full of errors we will struggle. The Knights are not really that bad, Mullen has an excellent kicking game and could trouble Tomkins as he is not the best at reading oppositions kicks. This is the same Knights that eliminated the Dogs and the Storm from the finals last year.
An emotional game for both teams, the Knights are backs to the wall desperate to earn respect (And a pay check) and the Warriors are back at home for Simon in his 200th.
Hoping for a big crowd, high completion rate (from Warriors) and win for the boys.

I like the look of this team. I'm usually a proponent of a two prop bench but with the freakishly strong backline we have its fine. It being a true home game and Mannering 200th game and this teams state mind being what it is, this is very much our game to lose. I do have this nagging feeling that the Knights are going to start a resurgence soon. AS
Sup42 alluded to, its Bennett most people fear... not the team as such. I think we win this by 13 + if we manage 5 try's. I'm feeling a hat trick from a properly pissed pom...big call I know...
