NRL ROUND #16 | Nielsen in centres

With incumbent Ngani Laumape facing suspension on a grade three dangerous throw charge, Vodafone Warriors head coach Andrew McFadden has confirmed a return for Nielsen (29) after last appearing against St George Illawarra on April 19.

The 103-game veteran’s recall for his eighth NRL appearance this year follows five outings for the Vodafone Warriors’ New South Wales Cup side.

The forced Nielsen-for-Laumape swap is the only change McFadden has made to the line-up used in the 19-10 win over Brisbane, a result which has lifted the Vodafone Warriors to 10th on the table. They’re alone on 16 points just behind four teams on 18 points (Brisbane, Melbourne, Parramatta and Wests Tigers) filling sixth to ninth.

“With Ngani on the sideline, Dane has his chance to play in the NRL again,” said McFadden.

“He has been working hard on his game in the New South Wales Cup. He gives our left edge plenty of experience and we’ll certainly need it against a Penrith side that has been travelling really well this season.

“This is going to be a massive challenge for us. We’ll have to improve in a big way on our overall performance against the Broncos.”

Nielsen’s selection for Laumape sees the same bench of Feleti Mateo, Suaia Matagi, Ben Henry and Charlie-Paul Gubb.

Playing in their 2014 Women in League jersey, the Vodafone Warriors will seek to take their record into the black for the first time on Sunday – eight wins and seven losses – but face a Panthers side which beat them both home and away last year.

Manu Vatuvei, named the players’ player of the day after the Brisbane win, makes his 185thcareer appearance this week, drawing level with Lance Hohaia on the club’s all-time list. Only Stacey Jones (261), Simon Mannering (202) and Logan Swann (195) have played more games for the Vodafone Warriors.

While he didn’t add to his record career try tally of 127, Vatuvei was inspirational throughout the contest, with 14 tough carries – mostly out of defence – for 148 metres. What really lifted the side was the series of four consecutive offensive tackles he made early in the second half.

He also stood out for another reason with his hair and beard turned gold after he was forced to bleach them as a team punishment.

Also nearing a milestone is centre Konrad Hurrell who will play his 49th match on Sunday.

As McFadden says above, Nielsen is the experienced player and therefore the safest option... as opposed to a debutant or weirdo second rower in Peyroux.

He doesn't mention any possibility of Fusitua not playing, which is a good thing... but perhaps they just don't want to advertise the fact we will have both flanks weakened significantly.

It's all fairly predictable stuff here, though I'm getting a bit confused by Charlie Gubb's ever-changing name in the team sheets.

I think he's trying to earn a TLA nickname like SBW, SKD, JWH, RTS, FPN etc but when the commentators ignored his Charles P Gubb moniker he decided to step it up a notch with the hyphen.

Danger's probably the sensible choice at centre so that Benry can bring his skills as cover for everywhere,
but I'll still be watching him like this Media has been hidden. Please Register to view.,

Good team Neilsen will do the job and Benry will end up on the wing, how valuable is that guy right now? I wouldnt mind Benry and neilsen in the centres with Hurrell and Manu on the wings if Fusitua isnt fit. Matagi and Ngani's fuck ups against the Broncos just dont make sense. Were they given a directive to get aggro? That didnt work out. To me this is a game the Warriors should win, they have home advantage, they know these guys, the Coach. Hold the ball, play your game, nothing stupid, and the Warriors should win I reckon

Still would have gone for Benry at centre and bought Havili in.

The experience card is being bought up again but not much point in selecting a guy based on his 'experience' when the other option in Henry is infinitely better.

Was hoping we wouldn't see Danger anywhere near the team again.

Well, the competent backline defence was nice while it lasted. Unless Nielsen goes up several gears I'm feeling pretty pessimistic about our chances. Could be ugly down that side of the field, but hopefully not.

There's an interesting analysis of the Panthers results and in particular who they've played on theroar.com.au today. Basically, it says that their top of the table (on points) spot is down to the fact that they've been lucky enough over the past few weeks to have had a run of bottom eight opponents, all of which they've beaten, but that against top eight opponents they're really not so hot.

That says it all, really. Against the better teams, the Panthers have a so-so record. We're a better team. Ergo, we win. Next!

Haha. I don't thnk it will have escaped Ivan's attention simply because it wasn't mentioned in the team list press release, Hitman.

He'll have a whole back room of people going like this......... :sorry: :sour: Neilsen's back :) but the Warriors are a solid team now  and they've got a great coach behind them :bag: and they're playing at home  oh fuck where's my mama :nailbiting: :dummy:

But we are a bottom 8 team and as you say the panthers have a habit of beating them. Will be a big test this week, if we play like we did against the Broncos we will get taught a lesson, play as we've seen we can and it will be a fucking good game.

We're on the up, tho, unlike most of the bottom eight. Take out our pre-Cappy-enthronement results and his first two, when he and the team were just getting into their stride, then do the math.

We've won 5 out of our last 7. Apart from the Souths game, our defense is rock solid and we score like the 2nd most tries in this comp- the only reason we haven't scored the most points is because of SJ's shithouse goalkicking. That right side attack is becoming near end a golden play almost everytime its being tried. All the shit that ST has faced has ignored the fact that with him in the team, we attack with both edges now, something that never happened before. Instead of a lets give it to Konnie and hope he tramples over 10 guys to score, we actually have structured plays that uses his brute strength to create holes to put Fusitua through. With Mateo coming into form, we can have effectively 4 playmakers on the field with Mannering, Bukuya and Ikahihifo now running awesome edge lines (Ikahihifo killer offload was awesome), its only a matter of time everything comes together in a dynamic attacking display. Once that happens, no defence will be able to stop us.

This Panthers team is beatable. Their last start was against the Dragons- and they only just beat them and were quite lucky I might add.

Obviously not. But naming a player means they're more likely to play than if you come out and say they're busted and won't play.
