Popular front rower Charlie Gubb is set for one of the highlights of his career after being named to play an NRL match in his hometown for the first time in Saturday’s 22nd-round clash against St George Illawarra in Wellington (5.00pm kick-off).

He was used in the New South Wales Cup side when the Vodafone Warriors took an NRL home game to the Capital for the first time in 2013 and again last year.

But this time the 25-year-old Wellington College old boy will in the top grade playing in front of family and friends alongside fellow local rugby league products Simon Mannering and Ben Matulino.

Gubb, a product of the University Hunters club in the Capital, will appearing in just his sixth game this season and the 12th of an NRL career which started in 2013.

“We couldn’t be more pleased for Charlie now he has the chance to play an NRL game at home,” said Vodafone Warriors head coach Andrew McFadden.

“It’s been great having him back in the side with the energy he gives us.

“His mix of energy and aggression rubs off not only on the players but also on the fans. They have really taken to Charlie in a big way and we know he’ll be keener than anyone to get out onto the field against the Dragons on Saturday.”

With seasoned back rowers Ryan Hoffman (calf) and Bodene Thompson (ankle) still sidelined, McFadden has made just one change to the side which lost 14-18 to Cronulla at Mount Smart Stadium on Saturday with Jonathan Wright in the centres for Konrad Hurrell.

The Vodafone Warriors’ third loss on end has seen them slip to ninth. For all but one week the club had been in the top eight since beating Cronulla in round nine in May.

“The energy was there against Cronulla but we need to be better defensively, in our execution and our effort,” said McFadden.

“With the changes we had we were disjointed last week, which wasn’t unexpected, but we’re going to need big improvements in what is a huge game for us.

“We enjoy being able to play in Wellington and we’ve loved the way the people from around the region have supported us the last two times we’ve been down there.”

The Vodafone Warriors go into their 23rd clash against the Dragons boasting just four wins, three of which were achieved at Mount Smart Stadium. It’s eight years since they last beat them (44-16 in Auckland in 2007); the only survivors from the victory are Mannering – who scored two tries in the centres – and wing Manu Vatuvei.

Vatuvei went try-less last week but made a game-high 195 metres from 14 runs in his first match in more than a month. He remains four tries short of 150 career tries.

In their two previous home games at Westpac Stadium the Vodafone Warriors lost 16-24 to Canterbury-Bankstown in 2013 and beat Wests Tigers 42-18 last year.

This year’s visit provides another tripleheader – but with a difference.

It starts at 12.30pm with the Wellington Rugby League’s club grand final, a match-up which has special interest for Matulino as the Te Aroha Eels (his junior club) face the Wainuiomata Lions.

At 2.40pm the Vodafone Junior Warriors meet the Dragons in the NYC fixture before the feature kicks off at 5.05pm.

Can someone explain why Hurrell got dropped?

    His last game.
125m from 11 runs (second highest metres after Matulino)
    3 tackle breaks
    1 line break
    1 try.

    12 tackles.
3 ineffective (Havili has 2 from around a quarter of the minutes that Hurrell played). Mannering had 3 as well. Friend 6.
2 missed tackles (9 of the players in the 17 had atleast 2 missed tackles too).

    scapegoat.

Weather down here in Welly is wet, windy, cold and miserable.

Can see the Dragons playing a tight game up the middle, they are defensively superior and should have enough points to get over us.

And yep Merrin is back so they are near full strength again.

Dragons 22 - Warriors 10 (2 bomb to Manu tries)

So Cappy changed Konrad to the left side, now he had dropped him for his left side defence while putting Kata back to the left and has replaced him with Wright?

    Cappy should drop himself.

Maybe Konrad pulled up injured? didn't someone report pre-game vs Sharks that Hurrell had a hamstring complaint? Haven't been Hurrells biggest fan of late, but he didn't play bad last weekend by any means.

This team list doesn't get me excited at all.

Cappy has gone full retard.....dropping Hurrell after a pretty good game as tajhaytajhay stats show after playing him on the wrong side of the field? For Jono Wright? The one thing that's held back Konnies development this season is lack of game time in first game - granted some of which was of his doing - but this makes no sense.

Ah, Cappy. Unless Hurrell showed up pissed to training or something, this can't be defended, do or die game, go down with your best players, teams scored 4 tries in 3 weeks and you go out of your way to reduce your attacking options?

    Special effort.

Also I trust Ryan Hoffman is enjoying his paid holiday, calf strain turns into a month off?

I wonder if this is his way of saying, i dont know how to get this lot to win footy games...so im making random changes so it looks like im doing something
I still dont get why hes so desperate. They showed a lot of energy last week. All he has to do is put them back to where they meant to be and im sure they'll give a decent account of themselves.

Of the 17 names used last week, K Hurrell is not the one that comes to mind when talking about players to be dropped.

I'd say he's dropped because of the second Valentine Holmes try. Even though that was without a doubt Manu Vatuvei's fault 150%. Konrad was coming across from the inside and had Gerard Beale covered, Manu came charging in for no reason leaving Holmes wide open. Manu if anyone should have been axed, but it'll be a cold day in hell before he is ever dropped.

Also, if he's going to cut people for piss weak efforts, what about Sam Tomkins for basically the entire season and RFM's defensive (or lack thereof) effort on Sam Tagatese? I don't blame Solomone Kata for the last try because there was little else that could be done, but his form has waned massively over the past 6 weeks (I would suggest he's worn out and needs a week or two off to recharge), and surely it would be an opportune time to freshen him up.

It just keeps on getting weirder.

I had this funny idea that the team was picked and organised in order to win matches, but it looks like I was wrong.
