Sharks players are trying to lure Mitchell Pearce from Bondi to Cronulla

SENIOR Sharks players have been texting Mitchell Pearce in a bid to lure the disgruntled Sydney Roosters star to Cronulla.

And Manly officials have been working feverishly behind the scenes to give their club the best chance of landing the NSW halfback.

Pearce will return from a US holiday as early as Friday to either remains a Rooster or seek an immediate release following the club’s signing of Cooper Cronk to a two-year, $2 million move.

The Daily Telegraph understands Sharks premiership-winning players Paul Gallen and Wade Graham have been texting Pearce, providing reasons why Cronulla would be an attractive destination.

The trio are good mates through their days in the NSW State of Origin side.

Graham is preparing for a World Cup quarter-final in Darwin with the Kangaroos.

Even with last week’s signing of Matt Moylan, the Sharks say they have enough room in their salary cap to secure Pearce.

Any decision will have to made quickly though given the Roosters, Manly and Cronulla will all be back to pre-season training next week.

Roosters coach Trent Robinson and powerful chairman Nick Politis have publicly tried convincing Pearce to remain at the club.

Pearce, 28, still has two years remaining on his current contract with the Roosters, where he has been since 2007. W

Newcastle are also monitoring the Pearce drama and could lodge the largest offer of any suitor.

But Manly and Cronulla appear Pearce’s likely destinations should he decide to leave the Roosters.

Pearce has been urged by mates to consider his future with clarity and a clear head.

Manly officials think Pearce would be an ideal fit at Brookvale. The club won’t release five-eighth Blake Green to the Warriors until Pearce makes his decision.

Should Pearce join Manly, the Sea Eagles would likely release Green. If Pearce stays, Green would be told to fulfil his contract obligations at Manly for 2018.

Manly coach Trent Barrett has been forced to play the waiting game.

Green has told friends he wants to take up the Warriors’ rich three-year offer.

Pearce left New York on Sunday bound for Hawaii. He has been away for more than a fortnight with girlfriend Zoe Gra

It’s kinda sad that we are cashed up and yet aren’t even considered an option by most top flight players

Very sad. I think most players would rather have a month of root canal treatment than come to the Warriors !

Mitchell Pearce requests release from Sydney Roosters

DISGRUNTLED Sydney Roosters halfback Mitchell Pearce has officially asked the club for a release from his contract — and the club has granted it

Pearce returned home from the United States last week and informed coach Trent Robinson of his decision over lunch.

The Roosters on Monday afternoon confirmed that Pearce had been granted a release from the remaining two years of his contract.

“We all love Pearcey – he has developed very strong relationships with a number of people at the club and we have been through a lot together,” Roosters chairman Nick Politis said.

Mitchell Pearce has been granted a release from the Roosters.
“While it would have been great to see him continue to add to his legacy at the Roosters, we respect his decision.

“Mitchell will always be a Rooster, and he leaves with our sincerest thanks and very best wishes.”

The disappointment of having to play behind Kangaroos halfback Cooper Cronk is the sole reason for his decision to end a decade-long career at the Bondi club.

The Cronulla Sharks, Manly Sea Eagles and Newcastle Knights are the front-runners to sign the Blues State of Origin halfback, while there has also been interest from Melbourne Storm and Brisbane Broncos.

Manly appear set to make a big play for Pearce, having on Monday released five-eighth Blake Green from the final year of his contract.

New Manly CEO Lyall Gorman said the news of Green being released after it emerged Pearce wanted out of the Roosters was “purely coincidental’’.

“I can assure you there have been no discussions with Mitch,’’ Gorman said.

Media has been hidden. Please Register to view.

“It’s purely coincidental the announcements have come out in the last 10 minutes.

“Blake had a long-term opportunity at another club, and we weren’t sure where we’d go with him after 2018, it’s not to set a precedent, but in this case we were happy to support Blake and help him secure the long-term security for his family.

“We’ve very conscious of the protocols of the game, but if a talented footballer comes on to the market, it’s incumbent upon us to listen on behalf of our members and fans and corporate partners.

    “We’d certainly listen.’’

Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan was unaware Pearce had requested a release until contacted by The Daily Telegraph and said: “From our perspective, nothing has changed. It will be ‘heads-down bum up’, and we’ll be continuing with our pre-season.’’

Mitchell Pearce could join NSW teammate Josh Dugan at Cronulla.
Sharks players have been in contact with Pearce about a move to the Shire, with Pearce a chance to join NSW teammates Josh Dugan and Matt Moylan in a summer move to the club.

Former Balmain great Steve Roach was one of the first to publicly declare his good friend was entitled to be upset about the Cronk signing, and was hardly shocked about the release request.

“I would have done the same thing,’’ Roach said.

“They could play together, but he’s been the halfback there for a decade, and it’s virtually saying ‘you can’t do the job’, so you’re better off going somewhere they think you can.’’

When asked last Thursday if he could work with Cronk, Pearce said: “Obviously if I ... yeah, obviously Cooper would be a player you could play with for sure. He’s the Australian halfback.’’

When asked about the Roosters not speaking to him before the shock signing of Cronk on a two-year $1.7 million deal, Pearce said: “I haven’t got anything to comment on about all of that.’’

Pearce has played 238 games for the Roosters since making his NRL debut as a teenager in 2007, and helped the club win the 2013 premiership.

So Green being released means we should see a Warriors announcement soon. I'm happy he's coming here.

MANLY Sea Eagles have granted an immediate release to five-eighth Blake Green.

Green, who was one of Manly’s stars in 2017, forming a formidable partnership with Daly Cherry-Evans in the halves, had a year left remaining on his contracts.

It was the 31-year-old’s first year at the Sea Eagles after joining from the Storm. He has been linked with the New Zealand Warriors.

“The Club has been advised that Blake has received an opportunity to continue his NRL career elsewhere over the next few years and in the interest of Blake and his family’s long-term future, has agreed to release him now,’’ Manly CEO Lyall Gorman said.

“We are comfortable with this decision as Blake is off contract at the end of the 2018 season and we are unsure of the likelihood of his contract being extended past that period.

Aysh is the best Blake but if you can come over and un-Warrior us we'll learn to love you Greeny.
In fact if we make the semis there's a good chance we'll make you King.

P.S. If you could hang around for the next world cup that would also be appreciated.

Knowing our luck just when we think this is Green coming or not saga is about to end. He'll end up signing with Newcastle.

Kent still on the thought that Pearce could learn from Cronk. Sounds like us and the Johnson needs another experienced half. Pearce a change of scenery could be good for him. Also could be good for the culture at the Roosters if his teamates that were close to him accept it and move on. The club put up with a lot of behavior issues from Pearce over the years.

James Maloney deal to be signed off late next week as Leilani Latu considers Gold Coast Titans move
Media has been hidden. Please Register to view.
James Maloney will meet his new Penrith Panthers teammates early next week as the club awaits a decision from Leilani Latu about a pending move to the Gold Coast.

The Panthers are yet to lodge Maloney’s $2.5 million three-year contract with the NRL, but the playmaker’s deal is expected to be finally announced by the end of next week.

A $200,000 third-party deal Penrith had planned to transfer from former skipper Matt Moylan to Maloney was officially rejected by the NRL.

Media has been hidden. Please Register to view.
Maloney is expected to officially become a Panther next week.
And with Maloney’s entire contract to be now included in the Panthers cap, the club needed to move on at least one player by the start of next season to be compliant.

Maloney had a quick tour of the Panthers Academy earlier this month in the lead-up to Australia’s clash against Lebanon, but is yet to be introduced to the bulk of the squad.

He will commence his month-long annual leave before having just one month of pre-season training to build a combination with halfback Nathan Cleary leading into trials against Canterbury and the Sydney Roosters.

INJURY: Link has been hidden. Please Register to view.

It was reported late last week Latu had visited the Titans who are keen to lure the prop north and rejoin new coach Garth Brennan.

Latu told The Daily Telegraph a couple of weeks ago how happy he was at Penrith and planned to see out his deal until the end of 2020.

He even laughed about the constant speculation surrounding his future, which included moves to Newcastle and the New Zealand Warriors last season.

Media has been hidden. Please Register to view.
Could Latu be the latest Panther to leave?
Titans chief executive Graham Annesley told The Daily Telegraph: “We are having discussions with Leilani, but we don’t have a deal at this stage.’’

Latu will make a call in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Annesley said he was keen to meet with Hayne and his management before he started his annual leave after Fiji’s World Cup exit to get to the bottom of his 2018 plans.

Hayne is expected to take a pay cut and return to Parramatta so he can be closer to his daughter.

We’ll talk to him as soon as possible. At this stage he’s still a contracted player,’’ Annesley said.

NRL 360 say Canberra are releasing Kurt Baptiste to ESL as they are over the cap.
They have recruited Saliva Havili as Hodgsons injury will go deep into the seasons first half.
Dont know how releasing Baptiste will sort there cap issue out.

You'd think releasing a reserve hooker and replacing him with another reserve hooker won't be helping them that much at all - especially since they're supposed to be $500K over the salary cap.

I heard that on NRL 360 and got excited thinking some of the bigger names would be mentioned like Paulo/Tapine or the Siezer/Austin. Then they said Baptiste was being released with Havili coming in. From that you get the impression they are not under much cap pressure as that wouldn't save a huge amount. They then discussed how a lot of big names at the Raiders need to perform next year which then sounded like any clubs wanting to pick off any decent players would need to wait.

They also signed a few players like Brad Abbey recently and released Zane Clark.

JARRYD Hayne has reportedly begun telling senior Gold Coast Titans officials he does not intend to return to the club in 2018.

The Former Parramatta star has been linked with a return to the Eels on a cut-price deal worth reportedly just $500,000 to $600,000 on a one-year contract designed to bring him closer to his family based in Sydney.

While Hayne has repeatedly denied the reports he is on the way out at the Titans, the former NFL running back on Thursday began telling senior Titans staff he is in fact leaving the club with a full season still to run on his contract.

Hayne was accused of stringing the Titans along in an attempt to hold onto $180,000 in “holiday pay” by only telling the Titans of his intent to walk away in January before his return to pre-season training following a break after the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.

The move would reportedly allow Hayne to continue his monthly payments of $90,000 under his deal with the Titans before he accepts his cut-price deal with the Eels.

Hayne will be giving up a rich $1.2 million per season deal to return to the Eels and he’s already made up his mind, according to a report.

Gold Coast coach Garth Brennan earlier this week said the Titans decision to recruit new assistant coach Luke Burt and other former Parramatta support staff was not done simply to appease Hayne.

Burt, who played with and coached Jarryd Hayne at the Eels, began life at the Titans this week, joining new strength and conditioning gurus Hayden Knowles and Craig Catterick.

In an unprompted address to media after training on Tuesday, Brennan said the trio’s links to the 29-year-old did not weigh into his decision to hire them.

“(Their appointments) are all in relation to their ability and I felt it was disrespectful to those guys that they were reported as me bringing them to the Gold Coast Titans simply because of their relationship with Jarryd,” Brennan said.

“They’re here cause they are the best people for the job.”

Didn't see that coming, I was certain he was headed to Manly after they released Green. I guess Brock Lamb is likely to end up at Manly now.
