    NRL ROUND #14 | SEVEN LINE-UP CHANGES

Vodafone Warriors head coach Andrew McFadden has made seven changes for the club’s 14th-round NRL encounter with the Sydney Roosters at Mount Smart Stadium on Saturday (8.00pm kick-off; match day sponsor: Vodafone).

The match headlines the #ZombieNight tripleheader opening with the NYC clash between the Vodafone Junior Warriors and the Roosters (3.40pm kick-off) and followed by the Vodafone Warriors’ New South Wales Cup game against Wyong (5.45pm).

McFadden was forced to make two changes to the NRL side’s starting pack with prop Jacob Lillyman (Queensland) and second rower Ryan Hoffman (New South Wales) both retained for tomorrow week’s Origin II battle in Melbourne.

Promoted from the interchange to start in Lillyman’s place is 2015 rookie Albert Vete (22) with Raymond Faitala-Mariner earning his second NRL appearance as Hoffman’s replacement after becoming the club’s 200th first-grade player in his debut against Gold Coast on Anzac Day.

Brought onto the interchange for Vete is Charlie Gubb, the 25-year-old set to play his first NRL game this season and the seventh of his career stretching back to 2013.

In other changes from the side used in last Saturday night’s loss to South Sydney in Perth, Sam Tomkins is set to start at fullback, a clean-shaven Konrad Hurrell returns from his three-game suspension to replace Jonathan Wright in the centres and Tuimoala Lolohea moves to the interchange. Nathan Friend is set to start at hooker after being used from the bench against the Rabbitohs with Siliva Havili turning out for the New South Wales Cup side.

“Albie (Vete) and Sam (Lisone) have been really good for us this season and now Albie has the chance to find out what it’s like starting an NRL game,” said McFadden.

“Ray has earned his starting spot through his efforts for our New South Wales Cup side as has Charlie on the interchange.

“Ken demanded selection again through his performance last week which is tough on Jono. He has been great for us.

“With Sam (Tomkins) we’re hopeful he’ll get through the week and be ready to come back for this game. That results in Tui moving onto the interchange where he can cover a number of positions for us.

“It’s also timely to have Koni back and I can’t say enough about how hard he has worked while he has been on the sideline.”

With a 6-6 record and 14 points, the Vodafone Warriors are now eighth on the ladder following Canterbury-Bankstown’s win over St George Illawarra yesterday.

Manu Vatuvei has the chance on Saturday night to achieve one of the most remarkable feats in rugby league history. He scored his ninth try of the season last week and should he snare a try against the Roosters he’ll have the distinction of scoring 10 tries in 10 consecutive seasons, a mark no player has achieved since the competition began in 1908.

Now 13th equal on the all-time list with 144 tries in 205 games, Vatuvei is also within reach of becoming just the 11th player to score 150 tries in the competition; the only current players ahead of him are Melbourne’s Billy Slater (172 tries in 277 games) and Manly’s Brett Stewart (152 tries in 201 games) while South Sydney’s Greg Inglis (129 tries in 213 games) ranks fourth among active players.

In 33 clashes against the Roosters, the Vodafone Warriors have won 18, drawn one and lost 14. The clubs are 2-2 in the last four encounters since 2012 while the Vodafone Warriors have a 9-6 advantage in 15 games played at Mount Smart Stadium.

So Havalli gone - is that the end for him - so who is the back up hooker - Tui? Whats this zombie nite thing is that because they played like them last weekend?? ;) I know its probably the best of what we have got but not that excited - especially with Ikiuseless there. :headphone:

Think McFad has done ok with what was available, Ikahihifo got to be on his last chance though. good to see big ken retained.

Be a great win if they can sneak it out, backs have be error free, seeing as our forwards will be struggling to cope.

There's a first time for everything I guess.

Looks like our season is dead already. It's Zombie Night at Mt Smart on Saturday and no I have no idea what this has to do with Roosters either.

Couldn't we just have Hangi and cook a couple of chooks ? I could kill for some Maori fried bread right now ...

    How ironic , theme day
    THE WALKING DEAD

Hope the team don't take that to heart.
Reserving judgment till game day on this one
I just hope the roosters don't play Matagi who comes on and kills us

While Havili deserves to be dropped (I might have given him 1 more week), Cappy doing it after his weird hooker rotation last weekend is a bit rough. I wonder if even Havili knew what the go was there. That said, his lack of fitness and inability to spark have doomed him. I'd say the final curtain has fallen for him at the Warriors.

Good to see Vete and RFM getting a go in the starting side. Huge test for them against the Roosters pack though. Mutts is going to have to be even better (along with Mannering and Thompson), showing Vete how it's done from minute 1. With Seb kept on the bench (*sigh*) and the unknown quality in FG that is Gubb (at least for this year), I'm worried what plan B is going to be if our starting forwards can't match it. Could be steam rolled city.

Apart from that, I feel sorry for Wright. Overall, he hasn't been as bad as a lot of our other outside backs in the error department (Lolo, Maumolo and Beast), but I guess he adds less in attack, so misses out. I really like Tui on the bench. He gives us so many options. Really hope he gets a crack at 6 at some stage with Chad spelling Friend at 9 (last 10 minutes of each half).

A bit harsh showing Wright as a zombie if he ends up missing out. Would have loved to have seen a zombie Beast or Mutts instead.

Havili had his chance and blew it completely.
Shows what Cappy thinks of him. It's pretty bad if your a specialist hooker and you get dropped for a bloke who had his worst game in first grade who is really a 6 whose been playing fullback, wing and centre and never played 9 before.
Havilli is not a first grade player and unless he gets some drive and focus to go to the next level he'll struggle to even be a NSW Cup player with interchanges going to 6, teams can't carry a hooker that can only play 20 minute stints and can't cover other positions. Still early days but his career looks over unless he changes dramatically.

Don't think Cappy had any other choice in regards to the team. Big Ken, Manu and Konnie will really have to rip in and charge at the line to get our sets going. Gubb, Seb, Vete, RFM, and Lisone will be struggling with the higher Defensive work load and I can't see them having much of an impact with the ball in the second half. Its a real opportunity to score a permanent bench spot for RFM and Gubb.
This will be a tough one to win, we really have to be disciplined and give away no penalties. I hate to say it, but we'll have to take the 2 points every opportunity and get a big lead going into the final 20. I can't see this team playing for 80 minutes, they'll be gone come 60 minutes and the back end of this one will get ugly if we are not careful. We struggled to contain the Eels and Knights reserve grade packs, so not a lot of confidence going into this one.
A real test of character this week.
The silver lining is that Roosters coughed up as much ball as we did last week and only scored one try against the run of play, despite a thousand opportunities.

I'm surprised Ikahihifo has survived. Guessing its more of a case of there being no one else stepping up and Lillyman and Hoffman being out already.
RFM hardly impressed in his last outing. Hope he Townsend Kata and Manu have been working on their communication and defence!!

That is one ridiculously powered backline we have there.

More tackle breaks than errors you reckon?

RFM will go ok. He has been picked on the side that Chad organizes, unlike his last game where it was the blind leading the blind.

Pretty good team with what we have. Feel kind of bad for Wright as he's been solid as last few weeks. Wouldn't have minded if Hurrell was chucked into NSW Cup for a few rounds for match fitness and just to learn to respect the ball.

Keen to see Lolohea at hooker or wherever he goes. Gubb is all class and I think he deserves a spot over Ikahihifo when the team is back at full strength.

    Man... Ikahihifo is so shit

You don't score 10 tries in 10 years by being shit.

Congrats to the greatest winger NZ will ever see.

Geez that's a green looking side.
It's got a real "local" look to it. From my count there's only four who didn't come through our system- no other club would get near that.
There's some talent there but man it's raw.
    Anything could happen here.

I like the look of the side. Shame there is no fit Rapira to add to the sides experience but still we have some good firepower and gives some youth a chance to shine. Roosters will also be fired up from their loss so will be a tough game. The blooding of the juniors will likely reap benefits but perhaps that will unfortunately come next year.

These guys better get into their zone and stay there or else its going to be a long 80 mins of pain and suffering and nashing of teeth.

Low error footy is our only hope of winning. There's always a chance the roosters will lose to us, but that's not something I like to hope for....
