The #TYJ stands for Thank You Jim, doesn't it?
Not sure there would be any need to give credit elsewhere.

    lol. Yep!

It's an interesting point you bring up. Anderson saw religion as a weakness of Polynesian players. IMHO, I think contemporary coaching focuses too much on stats and benchmarks. Sure those things help form a picture of the overall individual. But stats are also fashioned by multiple variables: How well the team around you is playing, their state of mind, your state of mind, how hard the opposition are playing, environmental influences etc. There is an abundance of talented players in some places, e.g. Auckland. But as our players have shown, all the talent in the world means nothing if the individuals are not 'driven' from within themselves. IMO, if you take away their drive, you lose their talent. To me, a good coach takes the thing that drives a player, and uses it to make them perform, and this is something Aussies don't understand about Polys and Indigenous Australians, because of the hegemony of their colonizing culture.

The Romans understood it. They took the religion of the colonies they conquered and used it to build their empire. Although their motivation was purely self-serving and wrong IMO. And that is something a Kearney brings to our club. He will know instinctively what religion means to our boys, and rather than shit on it, he'll work with it, because he's a Poly himself. And he learned the art of getting the best out of the individual from Bennett. Not saying he is as good as him at it, but I can see the influence in his comments he makes and the way players improve when they hit the Kiwi camp.

Interesting post. Mark Graham is a religious man and one of the best players ever but he could not get the best from his players. Some coach's just get the right mix of players and drive them to perform beyond what they think they are capable of. One that comes to mind is Brian Clough with Nottingham Forrest.
When he finally drank himself to death, one his ex skippers remembered him coming into the dressing room after a game against Everton where he had to mark Alan Ball. Clough said ' you did well today, Alan Ball is a world class player and you're not'.

Mark was a church going Roman Catholic if I recall. They tend to be less intense about their religion in public. Also he inherited a sinking ship.

Mark Graham was one of the greatest players our game has had. He was a good coach too, just happened to be with the wrong club at the wrong time. As for religious arguments I don't buy into them, there is no point. My church was at Carlaw Park and Mount Wellington rubbishes it:(.
