I spoke with Simon after the game on Saturday night, I asked what the go was with the injury and him leaving the field to which he replied "Just a burner but it's mostly old age".
He didn't seem to think anything was an issue and was moving quite freely.

Two players I expected to see something from in the trials were Cherrington and Santo. Are they injured or whats the go with them?

    Major setback for Roache

Vodafone Warriors hooker Nathaniel Roache is booked for surgery on a lumbar disc injury next week which is set to sideline him for the 2018 NRL season.

The 21-year-old Roache, the club’s 2016 Vodafone NRL Rookie of the Year, suffered the setback after returning from a ruptured Achilles tendon injury which ended his 2017 season in August last year.

“It’s really sad for Nate and we’re all feeling for him,” said Vodafone Warriors head coach Stephen Kearney.

“He’s a wonderful young man with a terrific attitude despite the adversity he has faced in his career.

He's a wonderful young man with a terrific attitude - Stephen Kearney

“He made an excellent recovery from his Achilles surgery only for this to happen. We wish him all the best for his surgery and we’re confident he’ll come back better than ever.”

Roache made 11 appearances in his NRL rookie season and added another nine last year before suffering his Achilles injury in training.

The Vodafone Warriors yesterday signed Gold Coast utility Karl Lawton, a 12-game NRL player, who covers a number of positions including hooker.

Meanwhile, new signing Gerard Beale continues to make progress in his recovery from the broken leg which ended his Rugby League World Cup campaign in the Kiwis’ opening match against Toa Samoa last October.

The experienced centre is expected to be available in late April.

Just read that on the Warriors site and was just coming on here to post it.

Terrible news for the young fella.

We have depth in that position but when fully fit he would of added a lot to the side out of dummy half.

    Bugger for Roache.

Genuinely thought he would be pushing for top spot this season.

    He'll be back

Good thing we just so happened to have another Hooker Specialist in Cherrington unless cap fluff stops us playing him.

Damn gutted for Roache, my personal favourite at the club. Bloke has had a number of injuries already, hope it doesn't end up down that path.

Surely there is a mechanism to replace a player in the top 30 due to season ending injury.?

I know there are dispensations available for medical retirements.

I also know that when somebody gets injured during the season there's nothing currently given.

But in this case where a player is injured without even playing a trial and won't be back all season, you'd think there'd be some creative accounting available. Sack him, employ him as an ambassador for the year and then employ him again for 2019 as a player again?

Is Cherrington injured? Seems crazy he hasnt got a run yet

Just about at the point where you put a line through Roache. Such a shame, great kid with a huge amount of talent.

Assuming this was another factor in the Lawton signing?

    Crap.

Spinal surgery is scary and potentially the end for an athlete.

I hope he gets back....others have done it.....he's young and a hardy sort.....so Here's hoping.

That's worth a thought and I like the idea but I don't think the NRL would allow a situation like that. Unless JT does something in the next week, I mean, the NRL gave him a testimonial that other players haven't been allowed, so they might "make an exception" a second time.

Bear in mind that now, with the football department salary cap, any player signed in an off-field role would surely come off the player salary cap and onto the football department salary cap.

Edit: scratch the JT comparison as he's retiring at the end of 2018. So substitute him for CS, who got the testimonial and AFAIK will still be going around in 2019.

Ambassadors wouldn't count under the football department but there are limits on how much you can pay them to prevent you paying say $1million to Simon Mannering after he retires for being a great player.

Damn. Was expecting Roache to make the jump and claim the no. 9 jersey for himself.
Wonder if they re-sign Luke, with the uncertainty around Roache being the full-time starting hooker for 2019..

    Simon Mannering will miss the opening round of the NRL season with a shoulder injury. He wasn’t on the plane to Perth with the rest of the Warriors squad and could miss a month. Ligi Sao, Bunty Afoa and Isaiah Papalii are possible replacements;

Veteran forward Simon Mannering will miss the Warriors NRL season opener against South Sydney in Perth.

The 31-year-old failed to travel with the side to Western Australia this morning and is facing up to a month on the sidelines after suffering a shoulder injury in last week's 20-14 trial win over the Gold Coast.

Mannering underwent scans on the injury last week and although it wasn't as bad as first feared he was unable to recover to face the Rabbitohs.

Ligi Sao and young forwards Bunty Afoa and Isaiah Papali'i are in contention to replace him in the No13 jersey.
