YOUNG STARTERS: Dargaville Bulls sports have managed to put together an under 7s rugby league team and with a fend like this Kaawyn Patterson has got potential.
MOANA EDWARDS

It's been one heck of a good season for Dargaville sports club Bulls and things are only getting better.

The premier netball team took out first place in the Dargaville Premier competition and the senior league team made the semi-finals, narrowly missing out on the big win by a few untimely injuries.

This is the best result the club has had in the seven years it's been around.

Bulls is the only sports club in Dargaville that provides a rugby league team and its pool of harnessed talent is about to increase.

Whangarei and Dargaville rugby league development officer Joe Rau says he will be holding free coaching sessions in about 10 schools starting in term four.

"Dargaville has been recognised as a potential rugby league nursery. There are a lot of talented players who have come from Dargaville including Kiwi Sam McKendry."

The whole idea is to clue kids up on rugby league knowledge and build on talent for the future.

Mr Rau says ultimately they would like a Dargaville league competition.

He will be in Dargaville three or four times a week for eight to 10 weeks.

Bulls treasurer Dania Woods says they have already seen an increase in interest.

"The junior league boys have had an outstanding year. We've had about a 30 per cent increase in the number of kids who are playing league."

Last year the club had an under 9s and under 11s team and this year under 7s stepped up.

"The teams all got to curtain raise for the senior finals with the 9s and 11s playing before the match and the under 7s playing in the half time break."

The club's season isn't quite over. Touch starts in October and Miss Wood says they are expecting a good result.

Cornwall Park hosted our junior representative competitions last Saturday with all 3 grades getting the opportunity to display their talents. All Cornwall Park games were live streamed on the ARL YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@AucklandLeagueTV/streams

Saturday was the perfect day for Rugby League as we finally got the summer weather in Auckland we have been missing for so long. These conditions allowed the players to show their skills which made for fantastic viewing. The Georgia Hale Cup U17’s kicked Saturdays Triple header off.

Shaun Johnson Shield (16s): Auckland Red 22 vs 22 Waikato

The second game of the day was full of excitement going right down to the wire with Auckland scoring two converted tries in the last five minutes of the game to come away with a hard-fought draw. Waikato was the better side throughout the 60 minutes but just could not hold on to the lead. The halfback for Waikato, Jaoquin Burkes had a fantastic game, with 2 try assists and a damaging kicking game really helped his side perform to their best. Kaea Cribb scored 3 tries coming off the bench. Kaea played a great game of footy and looked threatening any time he ran with the ball. Our Auckland Red side played some good footy in periods, Kaawyn Patterson and Boston Cochrane were standouts in the first half with their high work rates. Samuel Clark and Tyler Hahn-Falefitu scored the tries in the last 5 minutes and Lyric Matamu converted the tries to finish the game 22-22. After the win in the previous week and now drawing a game, this Waikato side is a serious threat to take out the Shaun Johnson Shield.

Like the club’s SG Ball Cup counterparts, the One New Zealand Warriors’ Harold Matthews Cup (under-17) side will have co-captains this year.

This is the first time the club has entered the New South Wales Rugby League’s renowned junior competition as it sets about building an all-encompassing pathways programme.

Guiding the Harold Matthews side in its debut season is former Ellerslie Eagles and Manurewa Marlins coach Thaine (TJ) Ashford.
At this week’s dual launch of the SG Ball and Harold Matthews seasons, he confirmed half Boston Krone and hooker Kaawyn Patterson as co-captains for the trailblazing campaign.

Harold Matthews Cup coach TJ Ashford with co-captains Boston Krone and Kaawyn Patterson.

“They’ve been standouts in terms of leadership during the preseason,” said Ashford of the two 16-year-olds.

“The boys tend to listen whenever Boston and Kaawyn speak.

“Kaawyn has a calming influence on the boys. His footy IQ is right up there.

“And Boston brings a lot of energy and helps to drive our standards.”

Patterson and Krone have both been in the club’s academy system over the last 12 months.

Westlake Boys’ High School student Patterson captained an Auckland under-16 team on a tour to the Gold Coast last year and also led Auckland against the Rest of New Zealand.

Krone is an Auckland Grammar School pupil with a background in rugby union while he has also captained the school’s touch team.
The One New Zealand Warriors face the Parramatta Eels in Sydney on Sunday, February 4 in their opening match in the short-form competition. They have eight regular season matches aiming to make the top six for the finals series in April.
